Mens Cosmetic Surgery
Men’s cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Although the number of women who are obtaining procedures is still larger than that of men, more and more men are choosing to have cosmetic surgery. The procedures that are chosen by men range in variety, as do the reasons for having them done, but one thing that is clear is that male cosmetic surgery is a growing trend that is not disappearing any time soon.
In the last few years, the most common procedure done on men has been rhinoplasty, or what is regularly known as a nose job. Rhinoplasties account for more than half of the men’s cosmetic surgery numbers done in the United States. Its popularity may be due to the fact that many men are self-conscious of the size and shape of their nose, which cannot be hidden or covered as other body parts can be. Another prevalent procedure among men is eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, which corrects puffiness around the eyes and drooping upper eyelids. This surgery has become a way for men to refresh their faces by removing a conspicuous sign of aging.
Liposuction is also a very popular cosmetic surgery for men. Many men opt for liposuction in order to reduce the excess fat around the midsection, especially since it is very difficult for many to lose weight in this area despite a good diet and exercise regimen. Men can also obtain liposuction in their necks, chins and jowls as a way to regain a slimmer and more youthful face and overall appearance. Hair transplantation and male breast reduction are other common cosmetic surgeries for men, although not as prevalent in number as rhinoplasty, eyelid correction and liposuction.
Rhinoplasty may be the most common procedure, but liposuction is currently the fastest growing in number when it comes to men’s cosmetic surgery, perhaps partly due to the faster recovery time when compared to other procedures. Eyelid and facelift surgeries are also quickly increasing among the male population.
A wide range of men are choosing cosmetic surgery, but most commonly it is males in their 30s, 40s or 50s that come from a variety of financial backgrounds. It used to be that plastic surgery was thought to be a luxury for the rich, but due to access to credit cards and bank loans, it has become something within the reach of the regular public.
At its most basic, the reason most men seek cosmetic surgery is that there is a part of them that bothers them, but the more specific reasons seem to be related to work or romance. Many men have stated that they have sought cosmetic surgery in order to look younger and therefore still be competitive in the work place. Others do it with the hopes of improving their romantic possibilities, which is something women will admit to doing more readily than their male counterparts. Whatever the motivations or choice in procedures may be, the popularity of men’s cosmetic surgery seems as if it will continue to grow in the coming years.
