Plastic Surgery for Men
Statistics from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that plastic surgery for men is a growing trend in this country. Once considered a “women only” thing to do, more and more men are finding plastic surgery a means to better their self-esteem, by making changes to body parts they are not satisfied with. The options for plastic surgery are various, and I will look at those in a minute, but first some more statistics.
In 2008 there were 220.000 reported cosmetic surgical procedures done on men, out of a total of 1.6 million procedures done across the genders. This means that men are now getting almost 14% of all plastic surgery. Broken down, the numbers show a clear upward increase, with hair transplantation being the biggest mover, up 72% from 2007. But the three most common plastic surgery for men are nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and liposuction. I haven’t seen any numbers concerning age, but I would speculate that these surgeries are most popular with men in the ages 40-60 years old.
Now, I have mentioned several of the available procedures, but let’s have a closer look. I have listed the procedures in the order of popularity, and also divided between surgical procedures and cosmetic procedures.
Cosmetic Surgery Procedures
Nose reshaping surgery (Rhinoplasty)
When you undertake nose reshaping surgery the goal is usually to change the size, remove a bump, or correct a crooked nose. 74,917 men had nose surgery in 2008.
Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Men undergo eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of the upper and/or under eye lids. The surgery involves removing excess skin, fat or muscle from the eyelids, which results in reduced under and over eye wrinkles.
Liposuction (Lipoplasty | Liposculpture suction lipectomy | Lipo)
10% of all liposuctions are done on men. The procedure removes fat from various sections of the body. Areas usually depleted of fat are the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and neck.
Breast reduction in men (Gynecomastia)
Some men develop abnormally large male breasts, which can be awkward for the person having them. A breast reduction for men surgery involves removing fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breasts, resulting in a decreased size.
Hair transplantation
Hair transplantation is a male dominated type of surgery, where men account for 72% of all operations done. The procedure is done by moving skin containing hair follicles (actually growing hair) from one side of the head to the other.
Cosmetic minimally invasive surgery
Next on the list we have the cosmetic minimally invasive procedures. These treatments seldom require rest time after surgery, and can sometime be same day procedures.
Botox® (Botulinum Toxin)
Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, can be injected to prevent wrinkles by paralyzing your facial muscles. The effects of a Botox injection normally last from 3-6 months.
Laser hair removal
This procedure involves using a laser to cause damage to the area that causes unwanted hair growth. 174.491 men had this procedure performed on them in 2008.
Microdermabrasion
A set of procedures commonly performed at day and medical spas, where dead, outer skin, is removed by a microdermabrasion machine. The procedure is also used to remove scars with raised tissue.
