Cosmetic Surgery Prices

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

When exploring costs of cosmetic surgery for men, it is important to keep in mind that cosmetic surgery prices will vary depending on geographical region, individual provider fees, the number of sessions required and the number of treatment areas. As a general rule, cosmetic surgery for men is not generally covered under medical insurance policies, unless deemed medically necessary.

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is a popular cosmetic surgery for men and women, and is used to reshape the nose for deformity correction or aesthetic enhancement. Costs vary depending on the type of procedure performed, with the total cost of surgery generally falling between $2,500 and $12,000. Simple rhinoplasty procedures, including primary open rhinoplasty and primary closed rhinoplasty are on the lower end of the range, generally from $2,500 to $6,500, while secondary closed rhinoplasty procedures may cost anywhere from $2,500 to $10,000.

Blepharoplasty

cosmetic surgery prices photoBlepharoplasty, which is cosmetic eyelid surgery, can be performed using a variety of methods, each at a different price point. Depending on the amount of correction or enhancement desired, as well as the procedure used, the average cosmetic surgery prices of blepharoplasty is typically between $2,500 and $7,000. Unlike most procedures used in cosmetic surgery for men, blepharoplasty may be covered by your medical insurance provider, particularly if eyelid surgery is necessary to remove excess skin that may be impairing vision.

Lipoplasty

Lipoplasty, also known as liposuction, is a cosmetic procedure used to remove excess fat and improve body contours. Prices for this cosmetic surgery for men and women vary depending on the type of procedure performed. For example, the average cost for receiving conventional lipoplasty is between $2,000 and $8,000 for a single session, depending on the amount of fat removed and the number of areas treated. For laser-assisted lipoplasty procedures, the average cost is $1,700 to $7,000, and the average cost for radiofrequency-assisted lipoplasty is between $2,000 and $6,000.

Gynocomastia

Gynocomastia, a condition that involves excess breast tissue in men, can be treated through liposuction or Gynocomastia Reduction Surgery, depending on the nature of the excess tissue. When the excess tissue is mostly fat, liposuction can be performed and typical lipoplasty costs apply. When the excess tissue is glandular Gynocomastia Reduction Surgery, a common cosmetic surgery for men, may be required, which generally costs between $3,000 and $7,500.

Hair Transplantation

When it comes to cosmetic surgery prices for men, hair transplantation is one of the most common procedures performed. Prices can vary significantly depending on individual provider fees, the number of grafts needed and the number of sessions required, but generally are between $4,000 and $20,000. The cost per hair graft can be as little as $3.00 or as much as $10.00.

Botox

Botox injections are used for the treatment of facial wrinkles and lines, as well as eye twitches and excessive sweating of the palms or armpits. The results from receiving Botox are temporary, usually lasting around six months, indicating that patients will require maintenance injections to retain their results. The average cosmetic surgery price of treating a single area with Botox injections is between $125 and $400 per session.

Laser Hair Removal

Patients seeking laser hair removal should understand that multiple sessions are required to achieve and maintain optimal results. The cost of each treatment session depends on the area being treated, with average costs ranging from $150 to $900. Smaller treatment areas fall at the lower end of the price range, while larger areas, such as the back, may cost $600 to $900 per session.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a skin resurfacing procedure that can be performed by an aesthetician, nurse or doctor. Patients generally require 5-12 initial treatment sessions scheduled at two to three week intervals, as well as maintenance sessions after the initial treatment series is complete. Depending on the type of provider patients choose, they can expect cosmetic surgery prices of between $75 and $300 per session.

Plastic Surgery for Men

Monday, January 25th, 2010

Statistics from the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery show that plastic surgery for men is a growing trend in this country. Once considered a “women only” thing to do, more and more men are finding plastic surgery a means to better their self-esteem, by making changes to body parts they are not satisfied with. The options for plastic surgery are various, and I will look at those in a minute, but first some more statistics.

In 2008 there were 220.000 reported cosmetic surgical procedures done on men, out of a total of 1.6 million procedures done across the genders. This means that men are now getting almost 14% of all plastic surgery. Broken down, the numbers show a clear upward increase, with hair transplantation being the biggest mover, up 72% from 2007. But the three most common plastic surgery for men are nose reshaping, eyelid surgery and liposuction. I haven’t seen any numbers concerning age, but I would speculate that these surgeries are most popular with men in the ages 40-60 years old.

Now, I have mentioned several of the available procedures, but let’s have a closer look. I have listed the procedures in the order of popularity, and also divided between surgical procedures and cosmetic procedures.

Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

Nose reshaping surgery (Rhinoplasty)

When you undertake nose reshaping surgery the goal is usually to change the size, remove a bump, or correct a crooked nose. 74,917 men had nose surgery in 2008.

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Men undergo eyelid surgery to improve the appearance of the upper and/or under eye lids. The surgery involves removing excess skin, fat or muscle from the eyelids, which results in reduced under and over eye wrinkles.

Liposuction (Lipoplasty | Liposculpture suction lipectomy | Lipo)

10% of all liposuctions are done on men. The procedure removes fat from various sections of the body. Areas usually depleted of fat are the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and neck.

Breast reduction in men (Gynecomastia)

Some men develop abnormally large male breasts, which can be awkward for the person having them. A breast reduction for men surgery involves removing fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the breasts, resulting in a decreased size.

Hair transplantation

Hair transplantation is a male dominated type of surgery, where men account for 72% of all operations done. The procedure is done by moving skin containing hair follicles (actually growing hair) from one side of the head to the other.

Cosmetic minimally invasive surgery

Next on the list we have the cosmetic minimally invasive procedures. These treatments seldom require rest time after surgery, and can sometime be same day procedures.

Botox® (Botulinum Toxin)

Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, can be injected to prevent wrinkles by paralyzing your facial muscles. The effects of a Botox injection normally last from 3-6 months.

Laser hair removal

This procedure involves using a laser to cause damage to the area that causes unwanted hair growth. 174.491 men had this procedure performed on them in 2008.

Microdermabrasion

A set of procedures commonly performed at day and medical spas, where dead, outer skin, is removed by a microdermabrasion machine. The procedure is also used to remove scars with raised tissue.

Mens Cosmetic Surgery

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Men’s cosmetic surgery has become increasingly popular over the past few years. Although the number of women who are obtaining procedures is still larger than that of men, more and more men are choosing to have cosmetic surgery. The procedures that are chosen by men range in variety, as do the reasons for having them done, but one thing that is clear is that male cosmetic surgery is a growing trend that is not disappearing any time soon.

In the last few years, the most common procedure done on men has been rhinoplasty, or what is regularly known as a nose job. Rhinoplasties account for more than half of the men’s cosmetic surgery numbers done in the United States. Its popularity may be due to the fact that many men are self-conscious of the size and shape of their nose, which cannot be hidden or covered as other body parts can be. Another prevalent procedure among men is eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, which corrects puffiness around the eyes and drooping upper eyelids. This surgery has become a way for men to refresh their faces by removing a conspicuous sign of aging.

Liposuction is also a very popular cosmetic surgery for men. Many men opt for liposuction in order to reduce the excess fat around the midsection, especially since it is very difficult for many to lose weight in this area despite a good diet and exercise regimen. Men can also obtain liposuction in their necks, chins and jowls as a way to regain a slimmer and more youthful face and overall appearance. Hair transplantation and male breast reduction are other common cosmetic surgeries for men, although not as prevalent in number as rhinoplasty, eyelid correction and liposuction.

Rhinoplasty may be the most common procedure, but liposuction is currently the fastest growing in number when it comes to men’s cosmetic surgery, perhaps partly due to the faster recovery time when compared to other procedures. Eyelid and facelift surgeries are also quickly increasing among the male population.

A wide range of men are choosing cosmetic surgery, but most commonly it is males in their 30s, 40s or 50s that come from a variety of financial backgrounds. It used to be that plastic surgery was thought to be a luxury for the rich, but due to access to credit cards and bank loans, it has become something within the reach of the regular public.

At its most basic, the reason most men seek cosmetic surgery is that there is a part of them that bothers them, but the more specific reasons seem to be related to work or romance. Many men have stated that they have sought cosmetic surgery in order to look younger and therefore still be competitive in the work place. Others do it with the hopes of improving their romantic possibilities, which is something women will admit to doing more readily than their male counterparts. Whatever the motivations or choice in procedures may be, the popularity of men’s cosmetic surgery seems as if it will continue to grow in the coming years.

Endoscopic Brow Lift

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Cosmetic surgery for men is much more common and accepted than in the past. While many associate the physical signs of aging with wisdom and experience, the sagging and lines which form can make a man look much older than he really is. Youth is often equated with exuberance and confidence, especially in the professional world. Various cosmetic surgery procedures can help a man look his age but with a younger, yet still natural, look.

Reverse sagging of eyebrows

With time, the skin on the forehead will loosen, sag, and form wrinkles. The eyebrows will drop and sag as well. A brow lift can restore the normal, youthful position of the eyebrows and smooth out lines and creases in the forehead. Eyebrows sit much lower on a man’s face than on a woman’s. Sagging eyebrows can be worse for a man because they can very easily obstruct vision.

Minimally-invasive procedure

Drooping eyelids can make a man look aged, angry, and tired. An endoscopic brow lift can successfully result in younger looking eyes. An endoscopic brow lift is a minimally invasive procedure which leaves little scarring. In the past, a full forehead lift would be performed to remedy this. This involves making an incision along the hairline to pull the skin back. This method may not work for males who are balding or have a receding hairline, this would only accentuate any hair loss. On the other hand, an endoscopic brow lift involves only three to five small incisions along the hairline. From here, the skin is loosened from the tissue and adjusted to raise the brows and remove lines and wrinkles. The natural hairline is maintained and only tiny scars remain.

Short recovery time

An endoscopic brow lift is a very effective, easily performed procedure. Recovery time is short and scarring is minimal. This procedure is much preferred to a full forehead or face lift which are much more invasive. These procedures have a long recovery time. Also, these procedures are often very noticeable due to the scarring which is left. A raised hairline is a sure sign of a forehead or face lift and is definitely not desired by men who may already be going through hair loss. An endoscopic brow lift is a great way to restore youth and confidence, all while leaving very little trace of the procedure. This is an excellent type of plastic surgery for men who want to maintain their appearance and age while still looking very natural.

Breast Implants for Men

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Breast implants for men may not be the most common cosmetic surgery for men, but males have been getting these implants for almost as long as women, even though it is not as talked about among the general public as female breast implants.

Men who seek breast implants are normally transsexuals, cross dressers, gender benders or female impersonators. The surgery is very similar to the one women receive, and just like with women, the decision to acquire breast implants is a very personal and important one that should be reached after much thought and consideration.

Pursuit of happiness and beauty

Plastic surgery for men is usually done for the same reason as that for women: to find happiness and satisfaction with one’s appearance, and breast implants are no exception. Most commonly those who acquire breast implants for men are transsexuals, men who were born with the male gender but have always felt they should have been female. These men may be in the process of gender reassignment, and breast implants is one of the steps they are taking in order to achieve their goal of becoming female, or they may simply want to obtain breasts in order to feel more feminine. Similarly, cross dressers and gender benders may choose implants to help fulfill their feminine identities.

Males may also decide to have breast implants for their professional careers, as is the case with some female impersonators. For example, a man who impersonated 1950s sex symbol Jayne Mansfield wished to reproduce her experiences as faithfully as possible and wanted to be more like her physically to do so, therefore he chose to obtain breast implants, which resulted in many compliments from those around him and led him to feel extremely happy with his decision.

Find the right surgeon for breast implants for men

Once a man has made the decision to obtain breast implants, finding the right surgeon is a top priority. Some surgeons may only perform cosmetic surgery procedures such as breast implants on women, so the man who wishes to undergo the procedure must first ensure that the surgeon he has chosen to meet does not have such a policy. The surgeon and breast implant candidate should discuss his goals and expectations, and some surgeons will suggest the man wear a bra and fake breasts to make sure he will be comfortable once he obtains the real thing. It is very important to make the decision carefully and after much thought, since although breast implants for men are reversible as they are for women, the reversal surgery would involve much tissue alteration.

Breast implants for men procedure similar to women

The procedure through which a man is given breast implants is very much like that of a woman. The implant, which may be made of silicone or saline, is placed through an incision that is made either in the crease where the breast meets the chest, or in the armpit, in order to minimize scarring. The implant can be placed on top of or beneath the pectoral muscle, but most commonly men choose to put it beneath the muscle due to the lack of natural breast tissue. Because men have less skin in their breasts than women, it is normally better to start with a smaller implant so the body can adjust more easily.

The surgery normally takes one to two hours, during which the surgeon can also increase the size of the man’s areola and nipple in order to improve the feminine appearance. Once the implants are placed in the man’s chest, stitches will be used to close the incisions, and a gauze bandage may be put over the chest. The patient will be given pain medications and recovery instructions before going home. Normally males heal faster from breast implant surgery than women and with less chance of complications.

After the surgery, the man will be advised to wear a bra to help contour the implants, since the breasts can move around and cause pain, even bruising. While breast implants is one of the cosmetic surgery procedures that are virtually the same for men and women, recovery is not the same for men as it is for women due to their different body structures and lack of female hormones and secretions, so the proper bra may be very helpful for men in the healing process.

Keep a good dialogue with your doctor after surgery

Although the breast implants for men procedure normally causes less side effects in men than in women, infection or capsular contraction (when capsules of fibers form around the implant as an immune response and squeeze or tighten the implant) could occur. Therefore, it is very important for those receiving this cosmetic surgery for men to inform their doctor of any signs of side effects or improper healing between checkups. At first the implants may feel strange and may cause some emotional distress, but generally after a few months the men who have undergone the surgery report feeling normal and satisfied with the procedure.

Breast Reduction for Men

Breast Reduction for Men Gynecomastia photo

Gynecomastia is a condition where male mammary glands become abnormally large resulting in enlarged male breasts. The condition usually occurs during a time when the man is going through hormonal changes. Male hormonal changes usually occur in infancy, adolescence and old age. The word gynecomastia literally means “woman breast.” Breast reduction for men (Gynecomastia) is available, and has become a common plastic surgery for men over the years.

Causes for Gynecomastia

More than half of male infants have enlarged breasts due to the estrogen passed on through the mother’s blood. The condition usually disappears a few weeks after birth. Sometimes the causes are never discovered. Many times the cause is simply unknown. There are different conditions and medications that can cause gynecomastia such as:

• Changes in the hormones estrogen and testosterone
• Heredity conditions
• Tumors
• Chronic diseases such as endocrine disorders
• Anabolic steroids
• Blood pressure medicines
• Anti-depressants
• Marijuana
• Heroin
• Alcohol
• use
• AIDS medications
• Ulcer medications
• Cancer treatments

Some men and young boys who are overweight have excess fatty tissue that gives the illusion of breasts. This is not considered to be gynecomastia, but is instead called pseudogynecomastia. This condition can be treated by diet and excursive where-as true gynecomastia will not go away with fat loss.

Men with gynecomastia suffer emotionally as well as physically. They suffer from insecurity and humiliation. Some men even feel shame as the stigma of having “manboobs” is almost unbearable. Teen boys can be ruthlessly teased leading to self confidence issues until the condition is resolved. Plastic surgery for men under these circumstances is highly recommended by professionals.

Breast Reduction for Men (Gynecomastia)

The treatment for enlarged breasts is liposuction or plastic surgery. In extreme cases both liposuction and surgery will be needed. Teens will need surgery or liposuction if the gynecomasita has been present for more than two years. Some teens will require a second round of treatment later in life if the condition resurfaces.

The reasons for performing breast reduction for men go beyond the emotional need to remove the breasts. In addition to reconstruction of the chest contours, it must be determined if there are any cancerous or suspicious lesions in the breast tissue that is causing the enlargement.

Plastic surgery for men

Cosmetic Surgery for men procedures for breast reduction are basically the same as for women who have breast reduction surgery. The first step is t o consult with a plastic surgeon to evaluate candidacy for breast reduction. Once the determination has been made the surgeon will schedule a surgery date and start pre-op procedures such as scheduling blood work and weaning off of some types of medications like blood thinners.

Risks Associated With Surgery

In addition to the normal risks associated with any major surgery, the following are additional risks of surgery for breast reduction for men:

• Temporary or permanent changes in nipple or breast sensation
• Breast contour and shape irregularities
• Skin discoloration
• Permanent pigmentation changes
• Breast asymmetry
• Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (this is called fat necrosis)
• Possibility of revision surgery for additional tightening or repositioning of the breasts

It is wise to always consider all alternatives available prior to having surgery like breast reduction for men. Consult with your doctor to check if you are a candidate for such a procedure.
